Can you believe May is almost over and summer is right around the corner? Part of me is pumped for summer and the warm weather and another part of me is sad about how fast this year is going! But I am just going to focus on my upcoming getaways, and I’m sure you have one or two of those too. If so, it’s a good time to bring up service for your Chevy! You want your getaway to be stress-free right? Well, you can’t do that if your vehicle breaks down! So, in order to avoid that from happening, we have created a summer car care checklist for you! Everything listed below is DIY friendly, which means you can do it all yourself, but if you’re not a DIY person we totally get that! Make sure your battery is prepared for high temperatures: Just like freezing winter temperatures, the summer heat can have a negative effect on your car's battery. Actually, the Summer heat can be more damaging to your car's battery than winter temperatures. Heat and vibration are a battery’s worst enemy, leading to internal breakdown and eventual failure. But let's face it we’re not mother nature we can’t control the heat outside, but we can control the vibration. By making sure your battery is properly mounted, you can help minimize any vibration. Another potential problem is corrosion build up from evaporated battery fluid. A way to help combat this is to frequently clean any corrosive buildup from the battery. I f a battery is more than three years old, it’s a good idea to have it tested by a trained technician to determine how much longer it will last. Keep your engine cool: Cooling systems help keep the engine cool and should be flushed out periodically. Between flushes be sure that the coolant is filled to the proper levels by checking the overflow reservoir. If needed, fill the reservoir with 50/50 of water and the coolant recommended by the manufacturer. REALLY IMPORTANT! Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is still hot!! If this is the case, there is boiling coolant underneath and could cause serious burns! Keep your tires properly inflated Driving around on under-inflated tires in the summer heat can lead to a greater risk of the tires overheating leading to a blowout, which is extremely dangerous for you and your passengers. It’s always a good idea to check your tire pressure (including the spare) at least once a month because tires typically lose about one pound of pressure per month through normal seepage. The best time to get an accurate reading when the tires are cool, so try early in the morning or later at night for the best reading! Not sure the recommended inflation pressure? No big deal, your owner’s manual will give all the information need to know! Make sure fluids are at appropriate levels Most engine fluids lubricate and serve as a coolant by helping carry heat away from critical points. If these levels are low, the chances of these critical points getting hot are at a greater risk of overheating. Periodically check all vehicle fluids, including motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and brake fluid, to ensure they are at appropriate levels. Be prepared for summer breakdowns By having a well-stocked emergency kit which includes water, food, jumper cables, a flashlight with extra batteries, road flares, basic hand tools, and a first aid kit. And if you have AAA or roadside assistance make sure you have the proper numbers to call. Summer is the season of having fun! You don’t want to derail that fun by breaking down or blowing out a tire on your road trip! Take the recommended steps to avoid having these issues, and be prepared in the case that it does happen. Human Error: Hey it happens we all make mistakes but to avoid having to deal with a dead car battery, make sure be extra vigilant before leaving your car. Make sure to double check your headlights, and make sure you’ve closed your doors and trunk all the way. Parasitic Drain: This is caused by components in your vehicle continues to run after the key is turned off. Your battery is pretty strong, it has enough energy to keep things like the clock, radio presets, and security alarms operational at all times but if there’s an electrical problem, the parasitic drain may exceed what’s normal and drain the battery. Bad Charging: If your charging system isn’t working properly your car battery could drain while you’re driving the car. If you think this could the issue causing your battery to die, a professional mechanic will be able to diagnose what’s causing the charging problems. Defective Alternator Diode: An alternator is what recharges the battery and powers certain electrical systems if your alternator has a bad diode your battery can drain. Old Battery: Old batteries are just that, old. They can be close to dying altogether and might have trouble holding a charge. This could be the case if you find that your car won’t start often. You are supposed to change your battery every 4-5 years so if you’re in that time frame and you’re experiencing issues with your battery, bring your car to a professional for a diagnosis. Thinking about hitting the road for some good old family fun? We totally support it! However, depending on how old your children are, traveling long distances with younger children can sometimes be more to take on then we anticipated. That’s why this week we have done the hard work for you and we’ve put together some of our favorite road trip games. I know what you’re thinking ‘how will everyone screaming eye spy, going to help make the ride easier?’ Well, if your little ones are entertained you will hear a lot less ‘are we there yet” and crying, which makes it easier for you to focus on the road and not on a crying baby. We suggest planning ahead a little bit and mapping out the best times to play each game. You don’t want to play all the games at once because that can become boring quickly and you don’t want to run out of games too quick. Someone starts the game by saying “I spy with my little eye….” and follows up with a clue as to what you are seeing. Each passenger takes a turn guessing at what the object may be, the person who guesses the object first gets to start the next round. License Plate Map: Grab a clipboard, a blank printed out copy of the U.S. map, and some colored pencils! When you see a license plate from one of the states, color it in and keep searching! This game will keep kids entertained for hours as they race to be the first one to get all 50 states! Plus, it will help them determine where certain states are on the map. The Alphabet Race A passenger picks a single letter from A-Z, whoever spots that letter out the window first (cars, tractor, billboard, for example) gets to start the next round. This game truly has no winner and can help pass the time especially with small children who are learning to associate letters with objects. 20 Questions Another one of my favorite games! A passenger in the vehicle thinks of something/ someone and other passengers have to take turns guessing who/ what the person, place or thing is. Guesses must be answered with a simple yes or no. After each answer, the guesser gets ONE chance to guess at what is the object/person. The passenger that guesses correctly wins and gets to start the next round. Spot The Car This game is great for older children who can differentiate the difference between various vehicle models. Renewing your vehicle registration can be a tedious task but it is an important one! It is important that your vehicle goes through a test to ensure it is safe to be on the road and safe for you to drive. Make sure that when the time comes you renew your registration on time because you could face fines or tickets if you wait too long. There are several ways to renew your vehicle registration, they include renewing online, by mail, and in person. Register Online: Take advantage of receiving a discount on your registration renewal fees by renewing online. You will need to have the following information ready: Control Number (shown on reminder renewal postcard), or License Plate Number and VIN of Vehicle (last six characters only) Credit card information - You can pay your registration renewal fees using either a MasterCard, Visa, American Express, or Discover credit card. Most people are pretty clear on which gas they should put in their vehicle but most people don’t know why, or even what the difference between the gases means! Well don’t stress, I’m going to lay it all out for you in this week’s blog and the next time you hit the gas station you can feel smarter than the average joe. If you don’t already know there are three different types of gas and they are Regular (the cheapest and most used) aka the 87, and premium fuels aka 92 and 93. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself what do those numbers mean? Or why do certain vehicle get premium gas and other get regular? Well, those numbers do mean something and the different gas will depend on your engine. The Numbers: The numbers you associated with the different types of gas speak to how high their octane level is. Octane is how much compression a fuel can withstand before it ignites. A high octane, like those in premium fuel, won’t pre-ignite or explode as quickly, which explains why high-performance cars with higher compression engines often require higher octane gas. Engines that take higher octane fuel tend to work more efficiently and emit fewer emissions and exhaust. Why does the right fuel matter? Cars are designed to run best with a specific type of fuel, and your owner’s manual will let you know what that is. You still might be tempted to save a couple of bucks by putting the regular gas into a premium fuel vehicle, I wouldn’t suggest it. If you use a lower than recommended level, the gas may combust too fast for your engine. That can cause the engine to make a knocking noise. In addition to this unwanted noise, a lower than recommended gas can also reduce your car’s power and fuel economy and cause engine When it comes to the opposite, putting premium gas in a vehicle that can take regular is a little different. The general consensus is that using premium gas when your car can run on regular gas doesn’t deliver any extra benefits when it comes to engine life, fuel economy or reduced emissions. If you’re interested in getting more involved in what’s happening under the hood of your vehicle, a great place to start is definitely the various fluids that call your engine bay home. There are five that we’ll cover in this blog today, but arguably these are the five that you really, really should know. So, without further ado, here are the FIVE FLUIDS OF DESTINY, or even just the five you should know. First, you have your oil. Without oil in your engine - or even sufficient oil - your engine will be running VERY dry and without the cooling and lubricating effects of the oil, your engine might even seize and weld itself together, effectively turning it into a block of metal that is shaped like an engine. To make sure you’re taking care of your oil, check it at least once a month and get regular oil changes. Second is the coolant. This does pretty much what it says on the tin, and cools your engine and radiator so they don’t overheat. The reservoir for this fluid is located near the radiator and is a clear opaque plastic container. You can see the coolant level through the plastic, which is good because the more the reservoir can stay closed, the better. If the level is low, take your vehicle to us so that we can top off that coolant. Next is brake fluid, which is also in a tank marked with minimum and maximum lines. Make sure the level of this fluid is good because if it’s chronically low your brakes might be wearing down. Regardless, if the fluid level is low you should bring your vehicle in for a brake fluid top-up. Power steering fluid is number four. The reservoir for this fluid is located at the base of your windshield and is a small tank (opaque, so you can see the level). This fluid makes steering your car easy, and without it, your steering mechanism will not operate properly. Make sure the fluid is always between the minimum and maximum levels indicated on the tank. Finally, the fifth fluid - your washer fluid! This one basically everyone knows. If you want to find the tank, look for a large cap with a windshield diagram on it. Pop that open and fill it with fluid that you can buy at basically any gas station. Bam, you did it! Make sure you always have fluid in there, though, because it sucks to get stranded with a dirty windshield and no way to clean it Service Your Vehicle For Less!
