We’re in the heart of summertime and with the hot rays and humidity, comes the heavy rainstorms that we love oh so much. When it storms and there is heavy rain the chance of a flood is much higher than normal rainstorms, but flooding can also be caused by blocked drains, burst water mains, tides and burst river banks. So no matter where you live you could experience flooding. And although it might have rained so hard the roads are flood you still have to get home from work, school, etc. so what do you do? When is it too flooded to drive? Don’t stress I’ve got everything you need to know as a driver if you find yourself driving in a flood. Driving in HEAVY water: Turn your headlights on- it can sometimes be hard to see in heavy rain and you want to be sure other drivers can see you Use fog lights: fog lights will help you see better when you can’t see through the rain Leave Lots of room: It is SO important to leave room during these storms, people can slide,  or they might break and you don't see them till it’s too late Slow down: If you feel that light due to hydroplaning, ease up on the gas and gradually decelerate, DON’T slam on the breaks Standing Water: Avoid standing water if you can, you don’t know how deep it is until you enter it and too much water is bad for your car If you’re unsure if you should drive through standing water let another car pass to see how deep it is. The rule is don’t enter standing water more than 4” deep If you do have to drive through standing water make sure you go slow and don’t cause waves Test your brakes immediately after If the water is moving fast NEVER enter it! What to look out for: Look out for slip and trip hazards like curbs under the water Manhole covers can get lifted and moved Water levels can change quickly Assume that flood water is contaminated Driving during a flood is never a great idea but it is understandable that sometimes there is nothing we can do about. Drive extra cautious is extremely important, be over-vigilant to dangers that could be lurking under the water. Most summer storms pass pretty quick so if you can pull over and wait out the storm you should do so. When it comes to a flooding due to a main break or another reason see if there is alternate root. If you’re interested in getting more involved in what’s happening under the hood of your vehicle, a great place to start is definitely the various fluids that call your engine bay home. There are five that we’ll cover in this blog today, but arguably these are the five that you really, really should know. So, without further ado, here are the FIVE FLUIDS OF DESTINY, or even just the five you should know. First, you have your oil. Without oil in your engine - or even sufficient oil - your engine will be running VERY dry and without the cooling and lubricating effects of the oil, your engine might even seize and weld itself together, effectively turning it into a block of metal that is shaped like an engine. To make sure you’re taking care of your oil, check it at least once a month and get regular oil changes. Second is the coolant. This does pretty much what it says on the tin, and cools your engine and radiator so they don’t overheat. The reservoir for this fluid is located near the radiator and is a clear opaque plastic container. You can see the coolant level through the plastic, which is good because the more the reservoir can stay closed, the better. If the level is low, take your vehicle to us so that we can top off that coolant. Next is brake fluid, which is also in a tank marked with minimum and maximum lines. Make sure the level of this fluid is good because if it’s chronically low your brakes might be wearing down. Regardless, if the fluid level is low you should bring your vehicle in for a brake fluid top-up. Power steering fluid is number four. The reservoir for this fluid is located at the base of your windshield and is a small tank (opaque, so you can see the level). This fluid makes steering your car easy, and without it, your steering mechanism will not operate properly. Make sure the fluid is always between the minimum and maximum levels indicated on the tank. Finally, the fifth fluid - your washer fluid! This one basically everyone knows. If you want to find the tank, look for a large cap with a windshield diagram on it. Pop that open and fill it with fluid that you can buy at basically any gas station. Bam, you did it! Make sure you always have fluid in there, though, because it sucks to get stranded with a dirty windshield and no way to clean it Service Your Vehicle For Less!

Summer is all about getting outdoors, getting a tan, and having some fun but what happens when that fun get derailed and you find yourself stuck the sand or mud? Don’t let your frustration get the best of your adventure, stay calm, and follow these simple tips that will have you back on the road in no time! Sometimes there are only a couple of options which including calling a friend to pull you out or calling a tow truck. If you don’t want to spend your summer adventure savings on a tow truck I've got some tips to help save the bank and your summer! Traction is key to getting your car of this messy situation (see what I did there?) Cars are meant to drive on roadways which have natural traction, mud and sand are soft and slippery...so the complete opposite of traction! This is why have such a hard time getting unstuck. First off, the last thing you want to do is it the gas this will only make you sink more into the mud/sand...so definitely don't do that The first thing you want to do is put your car into park Then take your car floor mats and places them under the stuck tire(s) as far as you can get it, make sure to leave some mat in front of the wheel. I would recommend trying to dig out some mud before placing the mats...sorry you’re gonna get a little dirty Don’t have any mats? Well then thank yourself for not cleaning out your car, lay down any blankets, clothes, or objects that could create traction. If all else fails use twigs from nearby surroundings Once you’ve placed something to make traction, get back into your car and put it drive, SLOWLY pull forward until you’ve reached solid ground Be a good person and pick up whatever items you use to create traction Enjoy the rest of your adventure and try to avoid muddy areas! If this doesn’t work for you it might be time to call for help. If you do get out of the mud make sure to drive slowly, mud could have gotten into your car and caused damage. Proceed slowly until you know that there has been no damage to your car. Get you out of the mud in a Chevy!

Are you a hands-on kind of person? Maybe you like popping open the hood of your Chevrolet and getting a little grease on your hands. Yet, you may not know how exactly to change the battery under the hood of your precious Chevrolet. If so, this week’s blog is one that is perfect for you! This week, we have come up with a guide on how to change the battery in your vehicle. Take a look below and give it a go when you feel confident and your Chevrolet is begging for a new life, battery we mean! Park your vehicle on a flat, leveled surface and give your vehicle’s engine ample time to cool down. Pop open the hood, locate the battery, and decipher the positive cable from the negative one. The positive cable often has a plus sign and usually is red, the negative will have a negative sign and is usually black. Disconnect the negative terminal first, loosen the bolt and remove the cable from the port, push toward off to the side. Repeat this step for the positive port. ALWAYS disconnect the negative terminal first because you can end up shorting your circuit if you disconnect the positive cable first. Once the cables have been disconnected, unclamp the battery. Now, you can remove your battery from the holding tray; be careful, can be heavy and difficult to lift. Clean off the terminals and the new battery before placing it back into the battery tray. Use a battery-cleaning solution and a wire brush to clean the terminals. If there is any excessive corrosion to the clamps, consider replacing them. Let everything dry completely before re-inserting the new battery back into your vehicle. Once the battery is back in the tray, secure it once again with the clamp we removed prior. Reconnect the positive terminal first and do the same with the negative - tighten all clamps with a wrench to secure that you have a strong connection. To avoid corrosion, apply an anti-corrosion solution to each of the terminals. Close the hood and try to start your car - if it starts up, you are good to go. If your vehicle doesn't start, check the connections and ensure your battery it tightly secured. If you are still having problems, contact our service department. If you’re unsure if your battery is still in good standing, give us a call to schedule a service appointment for one of our mechanics to test your battery. You can also ask to test your battery when you have your oil changed. This is a proactive way to know where the life of your battery may be. New Chevy + New Battery = Happy You

Are you planning to take a summer road trip? Perhaps, you're like me and get very impatient and can’t help but ask “are we there yet,” every five minutes. Well, if you are or maybe you’re traveling with children, you’ll need some entertainment to keep everyone’s mind off miles still left. We have listed out some of our favorite road trip games in this week’s blog! Take a look below and let us know what your favorite games to play on those long trips are! I Spy: great for trips with little kids! One person spots something and describes it (“I spy with my little eye something….”) and everyone else has to guess what it could be. First person to guess what the object is gets to start the next round! The license plate game: everyone knows this, but it involves trying to spot a license plate from each state of the 50 states, at least once on your road trip. Depending on where you’re headed, you could also include the provinces of Canada! Name Game: Pick a category (it can be foods or animals or anything) and the first person names something (i.e. Popcorn). The next person then has to name something in the same category whose first letter is the last letter of the previous name/ word (i.e. Noodles). Stories: one person starts a story with “Once Upon A Time” and then a single sentence. The story continues sentence by sentence, with everyone in the car contributing one sentence of the story at a time. The story is over when someone says “The End!” To spice it up, you could also start with “It was a dark and stormy night...” 20 Questions: everyone knows this one as well, but one person thinks of something and everyone else can ask 20 questions to try and find out what that thing is. The first person to guess the correct item/ thing, gets to start the next round! Are you ready to head out on your trip? Let’s take a minute and think about some of the important things about traveling with children. There are a lot of things you need to bring along with them whenever you plan to go anywhere, no matter the duration. But one thing that is extremely important when traveling with children is car seat safety. It is important to find a car seat that will provide the most protection and assure you that your child will be safe in the event of a collision. Once you find the perfect car seat to keep your precious cargo safe, follow our tips below to further the safety of your child. Avoid straps from slipping off your child by ensuring that the harness-retainer clip is always level with your child’s armpits. Check the clip and straps each time you buckle your child into the car seat Ensure that your car seat is installed correctly by bringing your vehicle and the car-seat to a local inspection site for a professional opinion A five-point harness car seat are among the safest car seats in the market If you have a forward-facing car seat, place the harness straps on your child’s shoulders. In the event of a collision, this will provide the most protection for your child. Children can outgrow their car seats, fast! If your child has outgrown theirs, high-back booster seats are safer than backless ones if a side-impact collision occurs, studies have shown. Harness straps should be snug enough to only allow you to fit one finger in between them and the strap. If you can fit more than one finger, tighten the straps a little more to ensure their protection. Car seats should never be allowed to wiggle more than one inch from side to side. Safety-belts should be tightened enough so the seat can wiggle but will not fall over or bounce around when the vehicle is moving. Children under the age of 12 should ALWAYS ride in the back, especially if they are in a car/ booster seats. In the event of an accident, the backseat of a vehicle is generally the safest place for them to be. Did you know that your vehicle’s radiator cools your engine and in order to function during the day-to-day drives it needs water and coolant? We sure hope so! If not, no worries. We are here to share some car knowledge and hopefully get you comfortable with what is under your car’s hood! This week we have a DIY guide to changing your vehicle’s coolant - check it out below! It is a good idea to do this before you have gone anywhere for the day to ensure a cool engine and radiator to avoid burning yourself. If not, give your vehicle ample time to cool down. Also, it is important that you are parked on a flat surface. If you are parked on a hill or a slight slant, your coolant will not accurately read in the reservoir. Pop open the hood and find your coolant reservoir. Instead of opening up the cap, check to see where the liquid hits in the reservoir - you should see a “full” line. If your coolant hits below this line, add a 50/50 mix of water and coolant (antifreeze) until you reach the line. Certain coolants are premixed, check the bottle for more instructions. Tip! - Only in an emergency is it acceptable to add just water to your coolant system. Antifreeze contains protective anti-corrosion properties that most modern engines require. Warning! - DO NOT add coolant to a hot engine! Or open the cap, you run the risk of burning yourself or cracking your engine block. Coolant can be ejected, as well. Wait for the engine to cool completely. More tips: Coolant usually has a color to it, popular colors are green, red, blue, or yellow. If your coolant has particles floating around, looks rusty or is colorless - flush out your system and add new coolant. When checking coolant give your radiator hoses a look-over. They are large in size and go into the top and come out of the bottom of your radiator. If they are cracked, leaked, bulging, or squishy, replace them. If you notice an oily surface, bring your vehicle to our service department ASAP to check for an internal head gasket leak. Our Service Department Can Assist Further

These items are all necessary in order to get you out the door with your new car, forgetting one or all can hold up the process until you bring them in. Review the Deal: before you sign, know what you are paying for, how much, and for how long. If you are going to be paying for something you should know exactly what you are paying for. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t understand something - it is your salesman's job to explain all the nitty gritty details to you. Take a Test Drive: it is important for you to test drive your vehicle before buying. This is a big investment and if you are not 100 percent happy, it’ll be a waste of time and money on your end! Even if you have to test drive the vehicle a few times and ask a million questions, it is better that you get everything you want that just agreeing to something. Lastly, be sure that you have all the answers you need and you’ve found a vehicle that is the right choice for you.
