It’s officially time to say goodbye to summer altogether. It might be a sore subject for some but as the summer tans fade and the warm summer air fades into a chilly breeze, we have to come to terms with the fact that winter is coming. It might be a little bit of a stretch this early on but it’s the first week of October and before we know it the snow will be here. It might be time for you to switch those summer tires to winter tires and get your vehicle prepared for the winter months ahead of us! If you thinking to yourself “I have to change my tires for the winter,” I’m going to take the guess that you’ve never had winter tires. There is a lot of debate on whether winter tires are better than all-season tires, or if you really need to change them at all. Unsure what you should do check out the info below and make an informed decision. The basics about winter tires: Winter tires, marked with a snowflake symbol, are made with special low-temperature resilient rubber compounds and have deep treads that grip the unplowed snow, ice and other inclement conditions under your wheels. All-season tires, regardless of being branded with M+S for Mud and Snow, might not be suitable in heavy snow. Winter tires are important for you and your vehicle's safety during the winter months; they help keep a better grip on the road to help reduce sliding, skidding, spinning, etc. Without the grip, most of your car's safety functions - like all-wheel drive and anti-lock brakes - can't do their jobs correctly. When should you change to winter tires: There are no clear answers as to when you should put on your winter tires, mainly because every area is hit by weather at different times and different severities. Aim for changing them when the weather worsens, but don't wait too long! The earlier you get them changed, the less waiting at the shop you'll have to do. While you can technically leave winter tires on your wheels year-round, I’d recommend against it. How to change your tires: When you buy winter tires it is suggested that you change the rims Doing this will save you tons of time when you need to change them. Having a second set of wheels for the winter also means your nice, clean wheels will be protected during the rough weather months. Renewing your vehicle registration can be a tedious task but it is an important one! It is important that your vehicle goes through a test to ensure it is safe to be on the road and safe for you to drive. Make sure that when the time comes you renew your registration on time because you could face fines or tickets if you wait too long. There are several ways to renew your vehicle registration, they include renewing online, by mail, and in person. Register Online: Take advantage of receiving a discount on your registration renewal fees by renewing online. You will need to have the following information ready: Control Number (shown on reminder renewal postcard), or License Plate Number and VIN of Vehicle (last six characters only) Credit card information - You can pay your registration renewal fees using either a MasterCard, Visa, American Express, or Discover credit card. Register By Mail: Mail in the registration renewal form that you receive from the New Mexico MVD along with a check for either a one-year renewal or a two-year renewal.  Do not send cash or credit card information. Send payment to your local NM, DMV Register In Person: Take your current registration information to an MVD Field Office. Be prepared to provide payment for a one-year or a two-year renewal. The MVD Field Office can accept payment with cash or a check. * Within 30 Days - If you are less than 31 days late in renewing your vehicle registration, you must pay a $10.00 penalty, along with the cost of your registration renewal fee. Most people are pretty clear on which gas they should put in their vehicle but most people don’t know why, or even what the difference between the gases means! Well don’t stress, I’m going to lay it all out for you in this week’s blog and the next time you hit the gas station you can feel smarter than the average joe. If you don’t already know there are three different types of gas and they are Regular (the cheapest and most used) aka the 87, and premium fuels aka 92 and 93. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself what do those numbers mean? Or why do certain vehicle get premium gas and other get regular? Well, those numbers do mean something and the different gas will depend on your engine. The Numbers: The numbers you associated with the different types of gas speak to how high their octane level is. Octane is how much compression a fuel can withstand before it ignites. A high octane, like those in premium fuel, won’t pre-ignite or explode as quickly, which explains why high-performance cars with higher compression engines often require higher octane gas. Engines that take higher octane fuel tend to work more efficiently and emit fewer emissions and exhaust. Why does the right fuel matter? Cars are designed to run best with a specific type of fuel, and your owner’s manual will let you know what that is. You still might be tempted to save a couple of bucks by putting the regular gas into a premium fuel vehicle, I wouldn’t suggest it. If you use a lower than recommended level, the gas may combust too fast for your engine. That can cause the engine to make a knocking noise. In addition to this unwanted noise, a lower than recommended gas can also reduce your car’s power and fuel economy and cause engine When it comes to the opposite, putting premium gas in a vehicle that can take regular is a little different. The general consensus is that using premium gas when your car can run on regular gas doesn’t deliver any extra benefits when it comes to engine life, fuel economy or reduced emissions.
