We all have to replace our tires at some point... theoretically... in the very distant future. It always feels like the distant future, right? I kind of think of my tires as a static thing - like, they're there but they're not really THERE. I have a vague idea of what they are and what they do and that I am, in fact, supposed to replace them every so often, but there's never a fully formed idea of what I am actually supposed to be doing about that. So, if you feel the same way, keep reading. Let's get our acts together and talk about tires. Okay, so, you are supposed to be replacing your tires every five years at the earliest. That's so long - I mean, you could give birth to a child and it'd be in kindergarten by the time you need to replace the tires you bought before the kid was born. Just think about that! So understandably a lot of us forget about the tire stuff. Of course, your dealer will have their own recommendations about how often you should replace your tires - maybe it's every ten years, or maybe you've contributed somehow to their decline in health. Regardless, you should be making sure that your tires are still doing well and have tread left. This is really easy to do with a penny - just stick the penny into your tread with Lincoln's head facing directly down. If you can see the top of his head, you should replace your tires ASAP. There are a lot of factors that go into your tires' lifespans and how long (or short) they might be. Some things that you can do to shorten your tires' lives are to not properly inflate them, to drive hard and take corners hard, and to do a LOT of braking. Some good ways to counter these are by checking your tire pressure at least once a month, taking corners at a reasonable speed, and to slowly approach stops so that you're not slamming on the brakes. You should also get your tires rotated every time you get your vehicle serviced. The weight distribution in your vehicle can affect the wear patterns on your tires, as can your vehicle's alignment (so, yep, get your vehicle's alignment checked as well). Replacing tires is an expensive prospect, sure, but a lot of dealerships have consistent coupons or deals on tire replacement. Defensive driving is, to most of us, a course that we have to take when we are kids just getting our licenses, or, something we have to take if we get too many tickets. However, it's also something that we should practice every day in order to stay safe on the road and make sure that we are being the best drivers we can be. If you're prone to road rage, defensive driving is a good practice to make a habit of - instead of being angry behind the wheel, focus on being careful. Here are some ways to practice defensive driving every day when you're getting from point A to point B. 1. Watch your blind spots. If you're keeping an eye on where other drivers might be, and making sure that you're not in other peoples' blind spots, you're at less of a risk of cutting people off or being cut off. This is definitely frustrating when it happens, and by avoiding it you're staying safe and keeping your cool. 2. Keep space between yourself and others on the road. This makes it easier for you and other drivers to change lanes and make quick stops. If you're making sure there's space, there's more time for you to react to things on the road - safe! 3. Slow down. Driving fast might get you where you need to be marginally sooner, but it opens up a ton of risks. When you're speeding, you're at more of a risk of getting into an accident, getting a ticket, and getting frustrated. Keeping up with the flow of traffic is always a good rule of thumb, and if there's no traffic you should be obeying the speed limit as much as you can. Your speeding can also make other drivers irate, which can put them in danger as well. 4. Focus on what you're doing. Your main job when you're behind the wheel is to drive as safely as possible. When you are fiddling with your playlist, talking to others in the car, or adjusting the temperature, you're not focused on the road. If you have a co-pilot, have them take care of these things for you. Otherwise, make sure everything is the way you want it when you get into the vehicle so that you don't have to adjust anything while driving. 5. Respond safely to people who are tailgating you. The correct response is not to slow down or speed up to try and get them to back off. If someone is following you too closely, you should make sure there's ample distance between you and the car in front of you, just in case there's an accident brought on by the tailgating. When you have the time and space, slow down a little more and get into the furthest right lane to allow them to pass. This is definitely stressful but managing a tailgater productively can be the difference between being angry and getting into an accident and staying safe. We hope these tips help you out! At Galles Chevrolet, we have a lot of people asking what the best tire pressure for their tires is. Typically they assume that the maximum PSI listed on the sidewall is what they should be going by. Unfortunately, the maximum PSI and the OPTIMUM PSI aren’t the same time. Sometimes, the maximum is actually doing more harm than help. Which is why it’s important to find the perfect balance. Let’s talk about what the maximum PSI is. Somewhere on the sidewall of your tire, just below the big, bold letters of the manufacturer, for example, you might have noticed the words, 'Max. Press. 35 PSI.’ That number tells you the maximum cold pressure needed for your tire to carry its maximum load. Now, that is the absolute MOST tire pressure your tire can have. Can being the operative word here. What it CAN have, not what the tire should have. We mention ‘cold’ pressure because that means you’re filling up your tires at the ideal time which we’ll talk a bit about later in this blog. Usually, your tire’s maximum tire pressure is either 35 or 44 PSI. What happens if you inflate your tires to the max PSI? The handling characteristics change Since tires inflated to the max can’t give as much on the sidewall, you might see superior cornering, but it could be at the risk of your braking threshold. One quick corner and your back end could slide out. The life of your tire decreases. When your tires are inflated too much, the rubber rounds out at the top of the tire when you’re driving, and the center will quickly wear out. You’ll also reduce your traction and you could even cause a blowout. Check out our post on avoiding blowouts. So, what’s the right tire pressure for your vehicle? You can find the manufacturer recommendation on a sticker in the door jam, or in your owner’s manual. Some models even place the stickers on the trunk lid, in the console or on the fuel door. Usually, the recommended pressure is usually between 30 and 35 PSI. That number basically shows the amount of air pressure needed to support your vehicle’s maximum load-carrying capacity most efficiently. Any less, and you’ll see poor fuel economy and handling as well as premature wear from too much flexing and tire overloading. When your tires are inflated to the recommended PSI, you get the best out of your tires and more for your money. The best time to check your tire pressure is every time you fill up for gas, every 10-degree change in temperature, or every 30 days. When adding air to your tires, try to do so when they are cool. It’s preferable to add air after your car has been sitting in the shade for a while. Well, it happened. I was on my way to work and my 2018 Chevy Equinox decided that right now, in this very moment, was the best time for it to just stop working. My car is brand spankin’ new, so you can imagine my frustration. Now, it’s not like my car up and exploded on me, but it slowly but surely stopped moving, despite my vigorous efforts to make the pedal work. For good measure, I got out of my car and popped the hood as though I had ANY idea what I was even looking for. I sat there for a solid 5 minutes, hand on my hip looking over all of the caps, pipes, and what I suspect was the engine, but I’m not even confident of that. Eventually, I just slammed the hood down and kicked the tire. Pro tip: Don’t kick the tire. I may have broken my ankle kicking the tire. Another pro tip: swearing at your vehicle also isn’t going to make the thing magically start up again. So there I sat, with a sore ankle and a stationary car. I didn’t have a choice but to call to have my car towed. I had no idea what was wrong with the thing, and clearly, violence wasn’t going to startle it to life. When the tow company brought my car to Galles Chevrolet (where I got the vehicle), I was a less-than-pleasant person to work with. After delivering a few choice words I sat down in the waiting room when a technician came in and summoned me. The man, as gently as he could, said “Um, ma’am. Did you happen to check your gas before you left for work?” I quickly answered no, and then the technician just looked at me, and said, “You see, Ma’am, your car wasn’t working because it ran out of gas. My entire person went absolutely beet-red. How is it possible that I didn’t think to check there first? I felt so foolish. I started apologizing profusely. Some of the things I had said to this man about my car not working were just mean, and he was kind enough to bring me away from the eyes of the other patrons to avoid further embarrassment. He couldn’t have been kinder and polite to me, even after I was acting like a total troll. Things we learned: 1.) Check yourself before you wreck yourself. I was so rude and the fault was entirely mine in the first place. He was only trying to help me, despite my jerky behavior, and I was still treated with the utmost respect and kindness. I seriously didn’t deserve it.  2.) The service department at Galles Chevrolet is filled with extremely patient people. I can safely say that they will have my business for years to come. Every other day of your life goes by perfectly fine, but somehow, when your mother is around EVERYTHING goes horribly wrong and you end up looking like you can’t handle yourself. Just a me thing? Cool cool. Welp, if you hadn’t guessed, my mother was in town last weekend and it feels like every time I tried to show her that I’m doing fine out here in the adult world, something went wrong and she seemed more concerned than confident in my abilities to survive on my own. Let me break down for you how this catastrophe of a get together went. We started off strong when I was running late to pick her up from the airport and got a ticket for speeding. Nice. Then, when I arrived at the airport to pick up my mom, while waiting for my mom to exit the gate, I was trying to hold too many things and spilled my center-of-the-sun hot coffee down my shirt, at which point, obviously, she walks right up to me. The whole front of my shirt is covered in coffee, my skin looks to be covered in 2nd-degree burns and my mom is attempting to remove the coffee stains with a Tide to go pen. I’ll let you decide how successfully that went. Then, after quickly throwing on a sweatshirt to cover my coffee stained shirt I took my mom out for lunch. Things were starting to look up. Well, they were until I realized that in my haste to get my mom I left my wallet at home. So my mom ended up covering our lunch. When we were ready to leave we walked out to the parking lot, but couldn’t find my car anywhere. I thought I must have parked in a different place, but there were only so many places I could have parked. My car was 100% not in the parking lot. MY CAR WAS STOLEN. Really? REALLY?! Perfect. So my mom and I call the police and wait. Fortunately, I got my car from Galles Chevrolet, the only auto dealer in the state of New Mexico who currently offers the LoJack System. ALL of their vehicles are equipped with the LoJack System. Which means things might just be ok! It took a few hours, but the Police were able to recover my car and I was able to get back to visiting with my mom. Fortunately, none of my mom’s things were stolen, BUT whoever took my car made off with my Justin Bieber CD. Of all the random things in my car, that’s what they took. Whatever. After all of this, I was CONVINCED that my mom thought I was a total failure. As is turns out my mom thought that the whole situation was unfortunate, but definitely made the trip more interesting. The only thing that mattered to her was that we were safe and she got to spend time with me. The takeaway here, pun intended, is that things happen sometimes, that’s life, Mom won’t hold it against you. Driving with my mother is a bit like Russian Roulette, you never really know for sure if you’re going to live or die. I spent 95% of my childhood desperately clutching the “I just want to live” bar above the back seat windows. My mom only knows 2 speeds: fast and stopped. There really was no in-between. To make things more fun, we were in a constant state of running late, so we were always in a rush to get where we needed to go. I’m actually fairly certain that my mom wouldn’t know what to do if we left early and actually had time to get from point A to point B. Keeping in mind all of this information, let me walk you through one VERY VIVID memory of driving with my mom. It was summertime and I was perhaps 8. My mom needed to drop me off at my grandmother’s house before work. We had a late start, as usual, and so we were tearing down the back roads. This would have been fine if it wasn’t monsooning outside. It doesn’t rain often in Albuquerque, but when it does, you feel almost compelled to locate someone with construction skills who might be interested in building an ark. So, if you can imagine, buckets of rain are pouring down and my mother, in her usual fashion is speeding down the road in an effort to be on time. As we took a particularly tight turn I started to feel the car slightly drifting. Only slightly, but enough to be concerned. Sure enough, one turn, just slightly too sharp and the back of the car starts swinging to the left as the car begins to spin. Without missing a beat, my mom, as though nothing out of the ordinary was happening, started to turn the wheel to the left. Meanwhile, I’m screaming and clinging desperately to the “I just want to live bar.” After a few times of turning the wheel the direction the back of the car went, we were back on track and driving as though I hadn’t experienced a trauma and the hands of a back road. After a minute of getting my little heart to calm down, I asked my mom what happened. She explained that we hydroplaned as though it was what we were going to have for dinner on Tuesday. This part is why the memory sticks out so much. My mom was so calm during the entire experience. How was it possible that I had watched all 8 years of my short life flash before my eyes that my mother was so calm and almost nonchalant about the whole thing. When I looked back on the memory later as an adult I realize that that was probably the most important part of getting the car back on track. If she had freaked out as much as I had, she may not have had the clarity of mind to know what to do to right the car in the first place. Granted, she 100% should not have been going 85 in a 30, BUT it was an important lesson that I didn’t forget. To this day when I feel my car starting to shift around I know exactly what to do and am able to right my car almost immediately, and then slow down even more! We’ve all been out on the road with a less-than-patient driver. Perhaps we’ve even been those drivers before. When you’re fighting your way through rush hour traffic, it can get a bit intense out on the road. So if you find yourself out on the road with someone who is driving a wee bit aggressively, here are some steps you can take to stay safe on the road. First and foremost, it’s good to be able to identify when you have happened upon an aggressive driver in their natural habitat. You can identify an aggressive driver by observing behavior: -Any driver that is weaving aggressively throughout the lanes, even during heavy traffic -Any driver that is tailgating, despite having plenty of room to pass the vehicle in front -Any driver that honks at or openly taunts other drivers that are going the speed limit -Any driver that doesn’t signal intent to switch lanes, which causes another driver to brake suddenly. These are your aggressive drivers. They can be wild cards on the road so proceed with caution. HOW TO AVOID ROAD RAGE Here are a few tips to avoid aggressive driving and stay safe: Do NOT engage with “road ragers” If another driver cuts you off, don’t respond by tailgating. This can enrage other drivers and escalate the situation. Don’t make eye contact or any gestures to the driver. Try to stay out of an aggressive driver’s way. In extreme cases, report the driver. If the driver is causing near-accidents or putting others in danger, it is important that they are stopped. Continue to drive safely by using appropriate turn signals, obeying the speed limit, and switching lanes with caution. Keep your distance, friends. While you may also be tempted to get flustered and react to the aggressive driver, keep your cool. Nothing good can come from letting them get your goat. Here’s the thing about your engine. It has a lot of moving parts, metal parts. This means that when it is doing its job correctly, it will get hot. I’m not talking “oooo that’s kinda warm” hot. I’m talking THIS WILL BURN YOUR FLESH OFF hot. You see even though it creates heat, your engine doesn’t like the kind of heat it generates. It seems counter-intuitive, I know, but here we are. With all of that heat built up, your car can end up damaged leading to a breakdown. Enter the cooling system. This system is the superhero of your vehicle. This system is designed to temper the heat that comes from the engine by transferring it to the air. Therefore, it’s the cooling system that allows your vehicle to maintain a moderate temperature while you’re speeding down the freeway. From what I can tell, your engine is basically that distant relative at the holiday parties that is never satisfied. They’re hot, they’re cold. The need a LOT of attention to be happy. In a similar way, your engine needs to run at a moderate heat, for if it is running too hot or too cold, components can wear out faster, it operates less efficiently, and it emits more pollution. So, a cooling system doesn’t make your engine run cold, per se, but at a constant, optimal temperature. But, what happens if you neglect your coolant system? It much like that finicky relative will eventually fail, and that could mean anything from an inconvenient breakdown on the side of the road, or major engine “meltdown”. I’ve seen Auntie June have a full-on meltdown, and friends, let me tell you it is not pretty. If your engine is anything like that, it could get pretty bad. Your car’s cooling system is made up of multiple parts that operate independently and eventually wear out. Because we have government mandates for fuel efficiency in our modern vehicles, the parts are more often made of lightweight plastic. These plastic parts are not designed to last forever, so they will need to be replaced, per the factory recommendation.
