This Friday will mark the second anniversary of the sinkhole disaster at the National Corvette Museum. As many remember, on February 12, 2013, at giant sinkhole opened up under the middle of the museum swallowing up several rare Corvette models that were on display there. Over time, the museum has worked to recover from the disaster by restoring the vehicles that were deemed restorable and repairing the gaping hole left by the sinkhole. Earlier this year the museum announced that they would be creating a special “Sinkhole Experience” exhibit in the museum in order to provide attendees to learn more about the disaster and become fully immersed in the disaster. Tomorrow, on the second anniversary this new exhibit “Corvette Cave-In: The Skydome Sinkhole” will officially be opened following an official ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. This exhibit will include videos and photos about the disaster and choosing the journey to recover and repair. Museum members will be able to enter the new exhibit free of charge while non-members will need to pay an entrance fee. Learn more about the exhibit here. Chevy sales results from the first month of the year have been released by General Motors. The brand reported total sales of 137,803 units for the month and stated that they recorded their best retail sales gain in more than 10 years. This also marks the 10th month in a row that the brand has achieved a year-over-year retail sales gain. “GM began 2016 in very strong competitive position,” said Kurt McNeil, GM’s U.S. vice president of sales operations. “We built on that momentum in January, with Chevrolet, Buick and GMC outperforming the retail industry by a wide margin. In fact, Chevrolet continues to grow faster than any other full-line brand.” Both the Chevy Cruze and Volt achieved their best-ever retail sales for January with sales reaching 14,362 units and 996 units respectively. Several other models reported impressive results for the month as well. The Silverado recorded its best January retails sales since 2007, the Tahoe and the Suburban both achieved their best retail sales results since January 2008, and the Malibu, with 17,746 units sold achieved its best January retail sales results since 1981! The vehicle Mr. Campbell was referring to was the first sixth generation 2016 COPO Camaro race car, and the cause it is helping is the United Way, a worldwide charity that helps struggling communities in over 40 countries. Last Friday, January 29th, this one-of-a-kind race car was auctioned off for 300,000.00. Last year, the Camaro was hand-built by Chevy and designed by Chevrolet and NHRA Funny Car driver Courtney Force. It has a 350 racing engine with a Whipple 2.9L supercharger, lightweight bucket seats, five-point safety harness, and a chrome-moly roll cage. “I was extremely honored to work with Chevrolet and help design the 2016 COPO Camaro,” said Courtney Force.  “The bright red color and the signature slash marks towards the back on the car bring a part of my Traxxas Chevrolet Camaro Funny Car to the COPO Camaro, which I think is really cool. The recent IHS Automotive Loyalty awards General Motors was honored to receive the  2015 IHS Overall Loyalty to Manufacturer award. These awards are presented by IHS Automotive each year and they are unique in that they are the only fact-based automotive awards. For nearly a year, Chevrolet has been releasing advertisements in their “Real People, Not Actors” series and they have now released a series that shows how looks can be deceiving. In this latest spot called “Unbranded” the brand puts the focus on the 2016 Chevy Malibu, but in a unique way. In the spot, a group of individuals are brought to a location to take a look at a new vehicle and offer their feedback based on the design, features, and technology that are available in this all-new vehicle. The catch is that all of the logos and branding have been removed so they are unaware of the make and model of the vehicle they are inspecting. “With the Malibu launch, we will continue to engage in authentic conversations about the product and truly surprise consumers with the exceptional design, features and technologies that they would never expect from a midsize sedan,” said Paul Edwards, U.S. vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. In the commercial all of the consumers are impressed with the overall look, style, and capabilities of the mystery model. When asked what brand most agreed that it would be a luxury model with a price tag in the $40,000-$50,000 range. For the tenth consecutive month the Chevy brand has posted a retail sales gain. December sales came to 188,794 units which is two percent higher than last December making this the brand’s best December sales since 2006. In addition, the brand closed out the year with a grand total of 2,125,347 units sold, which is a 4.5 percent increase over the previous year.
