Chevy Corvette Grand Sport History - Part 3

In our last two blogs we have taken a look at the highlights from the 60s, 80s, and 90s on our journey through the history of the Chevy Corvette Grand Sport and its impact on professional racing. Now for the third and final part of this journey, we will be exploring all of the vehicle's highlights from 2005 through the present and into the future. 2005 - Following the success of their C5-R, Corvette Racing took things to the next level with the release of their C6.R. The build and design of this model and its powertrain were similar to the Corvette Z06 with its overall look much more similar to the production versions of the Corvette. Looks can be deceiving though, as this model was still very much a powerful race car, a fact it proved with 39 GT1 race victories in ALMS over the next few years. In fact, from 2005-2006 it had 12 straight wins, and from 2007-2009 this vehicle celebrated 25 straight wins. 2010 - Corvette Racing brought back the Grand Sport as part of the new C6 generation with a new, more distinct design scheme and a wider chassis that had been seen in the Z06. The popularity of this model quickly grew making it the most popular model in the Corvette lineup. By the time the sixth generation Corvette ended in 2013, this model accounted for more than half of the generation’s total sales. 2014 - The release of the seventh generation Corvette marked the introduction of the all-new C7.R. This model not only used a production Z06 frame, but it was also the first race car to be built with production models at the Bowling Green Ky., assembly plant. The C7.R then went on to win 2015 Le Mans in the GTE Pro class. 2017 - Chevy announced the return of the Grand Sport for the 2017 model year. This all-new model incorporates some of the classic stylings while also becoming the first production model to be equipped with the chassis and suspension seen in the high-performance supercharged models along with wider fenders and tires. Chevy Corvette Grand Sport History - Part 2

In our last blog we shared the first part of our journey through the racing history of the Chevy Corvette Grand Sport which took us all through the 60’s. Now we will be moving on to the next phase of this vehicle’s illustrious racing history as we explore some of its more prominent achievements in the 80s and 90s. 1984 - This year marked the release of the Z51 performance handling package as part of the “C4” generation and quickly became the preferred choice amongst Corvette racers. However, this model became so popular in the world of SCCA Showroom Stock racing that in 1988 it was banned, thus leading to the development of the Corvette Challenger series. 1996 - The Corvette Grand Sport special edition was introduced this year at the end of the fourth generation with a limited production of only 1,000 units. 810 of these models were coupes while the remaining 190 were convertibles and they were all powered by a 330-hp LT4 engine. Additionally, each of these models featured an Admiral Blue exterior with an Arctic White stripe and red hash marks on the left-front fender, and black wheels with flares for the rear fenders. 1999 - The fifth generation Corvette and the C5-R race car marked the return of Corvette Racing in spectacular fashion with the team achieving their first three GTS class wins as Le Mans 2001. Additionally, the C5-R went on to achieve ALMS team and manufacturer titles over the next four years in a row. "Corvette Grand Sport’s Racing Legacy On and Off the Track."Media.gm.com. Chevy Corvette Grand Sport History - Part 1

The Chevy Corvette Grand Sport has had a long and illustrious history in the world of racing that spans more than five decades. We are going to take a look through some of the most significant moments in the history of this vehicle over the years. This blog will include the first few years of the time table and be sure to look out for the remainder in future blogs. 1960 - The Corvette made its first appearance at 24 Hours of Le Mans when Corvette’s first chief engineer and racer, Briggs Cunningham entered three stock models into the infamous endurance race. All three vehicles were powered by a  283 “Fuelie” mechanically fuel-injected small block V8 engine, and they proved quite successful in their first outing with the No. 3 Corvette driven by John Fitch and Bob Grossman finishing eighth overall and winning the large-displacement GT class. 1962-1963 -  Following the initial success of Corvette in the world of racing, Arkus-Duntov commissioned the first-ever Corvette Grand Sport race cars. These vehicles were intended to be used for the 1963 Le Mans race with  Arkus-Duntov planning to build 125 ultra-light, high-powered cars. Unfortunately, only five were completed before General Motors declared a ban on “factory” racing support, killing off the Grand Sport program. 1963-1964 - Even though GM had placed a ban on racing, Arkus-Duntov handed off the already built Grand Sports to private racers such as Roger Penske, A.J. Foyt, Jim Hall and Dick Thompson, allowing them to be evaluated in real-world racing situations. 1967 - Throughout the remainder of the 1960s, Arkus-Duntov made sure to keep the spirit Grand Sport a face in the racing community by assisting in the development of new features that would help to transform production vehicles into racing vehicles, such as larger fuel tanks and heavy-duty brakes. He even played a large role in the development of the L-88 big block engine program that launched this year. This revolutionary new engine provided racers with the advantage of a high-horsepower that fit within the rules of racing. "Corvette Grand Sport’s Racing Legacy On and Off the Track."Media.gm.com. Urban Farmer Andy Chae Is Finding New Roads With Chevy

The Chevrolet brand is all about exploring new ideas and possibilities, a fact that is evident through their #FindNewRoads tagline. As such, they are celebrating individuals who look for ways to live up to this ideal by branching out and thinking outside the box. In one of the brand’s newest videos, they have chosen to highlight the efforts of urban farmer Andy Chae. Andy runs a local farm in Detroit, MI out of what used to be a vacant lot located within the city. He said that what started out as a hobby has gradually turned into a successful business and he works with local retailers and restaurants to supply them with locally-grown produce. Not only is he living up to the #FindNewRoads mentality, but he does so with the help of his Chevy Silverado which makes it easier for him to always get the job done. His hope is that one day Detroit will become a city that is fully immersed in the farm-to-table lifestyle.

Chevy Releases Horror Movie Trailer To Demonstrate Safety Warnings

Anyone who has ever watched a horror movie knows all too well the feeling of anxiety that comes with watching the characters on screen make a decision that you know will end in disaster. No matter how hard we yell at the screen warning them against opening that door or walking down that hallway we must sit back and helplessly watch as our warnings go ignored. Chevrolet decided to take that all-too-familiar moment and use it to showcase the array of advanced safety features in the 2016 Chevy Malibu and Cruze. “We continue to look for unexpected, attention grabbing ways to tell our story,” said Paul Edwards, U.S. vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. “With this trailer, we have thrown a twist into that quintessential, edge of your seat horror movie moment to highlight the comprehensive suite of available active safety technologies in our new Malibu and Cruze.” The new 60-second spot was directed by Sam Raimi who is best known for the Evil Dead Series and the original Spiderman Trilogy. In the spot we are presented with what appears to be a trailer for a new horror movie that takes place at an old haunted house. The main character is seen walking through this house while creepy things are happening all around her. Finally, in the pivotal moment at the end of the trailer she is seen walking towards a door at the end of a dark hallway with ominous sounds coming from behind it. Just as she is about to grab the handle, members from the audience shout out warnings about the danger lurking behind it and she quickly turns and walks away from the impending doom. The point of this spot is to show the convenience of being warned to danger which is what the 2016 Chevy Malibu and Cruze do thanks to their safety features and technologies. A few of these technologies include Front Pedestrian Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Zone Alert with Lane Change Alert, New Forward Collision Alert with Following Distance Indicator, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Front and Rear Park Assist, Intellibeam, Adaptive Cruise Control with Front Automatic Braking, and Automatic Parking Assist. Chevrolet will be releasing this trailer in about 2,300 theaters, playing on 14,000 screens across the country during the six months. You can see the spot below and be sure to look out for it on the big screen the next time you go to the movies. "Chevrolet Debuts a Horror Film Inspired Trailer with a Twist." Media.gm.com.
